Title: Enabling Drug Discovery for Natural & Synthetic Products: A new approach

Abstract: View Abstract

Natural Products Research or Natural products chemistry are in focus again. Two reasons we can correlate here are:

  1. Organizations have tried several approaches to find the new chemical entities (drugs) and now the options are drying out; we need to look somewhere else. Natural products could be a good start point and has a shorter time requirement.
  2. With so many similar drugs in the market there is a shift of focus on the quality of compounds produced in discovery rather than quantity. The expectations are many folds higher for efficacy and safety of a new drug. We need diversity!

Hence we should look for different/unique sources of new biologically active chemicals within plants, microbes, marine plants, marine-life, etc. Now there are tools and technology available which can help in speeding up this research in various aspects. Being an organization involved in providing such solutions for 20 years we have worked with many such initiatives successfully. This presentation outlines the role of software solution that can offer a lot of help and guidance in characterization of these (pre-existing but unknown) chemicals, evaluating them for its drug likeliness, estimating its safety profile, understanding its ADME-profile, finding a separation method, understanding its metabolites. There are several steps in several departments which can be either removed or reduced with the help of these new generation technology.

Presenter

Bio: Following a Masters in Physics with an MBA, K.K. Bhagchandani has worked in the life sciences industry for almost twenty years. Having started his career in India working for pharmaceutical industry leaders Ranbaxy and Pfizer, he made a change in his career path with a move to software and IT. For more than a decade he has been involved in the Asian business world working for global IT-Software companies that provide enabling technologies for pharmaceutical and chemical R&D. In 2003 he joined ACD/Labs—a leader in predictive ADME-Tox, PhysChem, and nomenclature software for analytical data handling and chemical and analytical knowledge management—where he is currently the Director of Asia and Pacific Operations. He has been a regular presenter at international scientific conferences and meetings, presenting tools that will help increase efficiency and productivity in R&D.
