ACD/Labs Star Pick Award

Advanced Chemistry Development has certainly earned its fair share of awards. In the course of exploring the web, we sometimes encounter new and exciting chemical presentations that we would like to share with you, our readers. We thought it only fair to recognize the hard work of all those who deliver innovative and useful web-based chemistry information to the world-at-large. We are happy to honor our fellow Chemistry web stars with Star Pick Awards. Each month we single out one chemistry site of particular merit and feature it on this awards page. Nominations are welcome, too (see the bottom of this page). To qualify, a site must be high quality, responsive, and there must be plenty of content. Congratulations to the November 2002 ACD/Labs Star Pick Award winner, ChemicalElements, maintained by Yinon Bentor. This site centers around an interactive periodic table that can be displayed in numerous formats: name, atomic number, electron configuration, melting point, date of discovery, crystal structure, and more. Click on an element in the table for a page of detailed physical information, an image of the atomic structure, interesting facts, and related links. All in all, a fun site to explore - come prepared to stay awhile! Well done ChemicalElements, another well-deserved winner of the Star Pick Award.

The July 2002 ACD/Labs Star Pick Award goes to the Chemistry Equation Calculator, maintained by James T. Parker. This site is simple in concept - just type in a chemical equation, click a button and the equation is instantly balanced! But that's just the start. This little program can also deal with limiting reagents, ideal gases, equations with free electrons, and more. It is a fantastic educational tool for students (just remember to do your own homework and then use the chemistry calculator to check your answers!) Congratulations to the June 2002 ACD/Labs Star Pick Award winner, allatoms.com maintained by William Rushin. This site contains over 300 student produced projects and various experiments in the "Adventures of an Alchemist" section. What's more, the site offers two easy-to-follow on-line courses, Chem I - Introductory Chemistry and Chem II - Advanced Chemistry. Within these pages you will find tips on effectively writing lab reports, lab safety rules, and other exciting topics! Bookmark this page!

Our May 2002 ACD/Labs Star Pick Award goes to The Orbitron - A Gallery of Orbitals on the WWW maintained by Dr. Mark Winter of the University of Sheffield. If you're a student still trying to understand the theory behind orbitals, this site is for you! This graphics-rich website is full of colorful representations and animations of atomic orbitals to help you visually understand this sometimes-complex topic. The site covers an introduction to each energy level as well as the theory behind wave function, electron density, dot density, radial distribution, and associated mathematical equations. We thank you and salute you with the May 2002 ACD/Labs Star Pick Award!

Our April 2002 Star Pick Award goes to Classe de Sciences @t home maintained by Bruno Haas. The website (offered in French) offers college level teachers and students useful re sources and links to enhance learning in chemistry and related disciplines. This colorful and visually stimulating web site provides links to chemistry, biology, and physics areas. Furthermore, it offers a very cool ACD/ChemSketch Tutorial, a detailed laboratory section, and an interactive periodic table of elements. We are pleased to honor his efforts with the April 2002 ACD/Labs Star Pick Award. Congratulations!
