Preamble

Terminal Characteristic Groups

Prefixes that represent complete terminal characteristic groups are preferred to those representing only a portion of a given group.

Examples: Cf. Rule
3-(Formylmethyl)heptanedial preferred to
3-(2-Oxoethyl)heptanedial C-303.3
7-Thioformylheptanoic acid preferred to
8-Thioxooctanoic acid C-531.3
