What's New in 5.0

General Comments about Commercial ACD Software

(a) All ACD software programs run as 32-bit applications on PCs with Windows 95/98/NT4/ME/2000 operating systems, except for ACD/I-Lab for Intranets and products for SGI and Sun Solaris platforms.

(b) There are no more Chemist's Version programs (pKa Calculator, LogP Calculator, Solubility Calculator, BP Calculator, Name Generator, and HNMR or CNMR Spectrum Generator). This "economy" product line was distinguishable by the limited number of atoms (50) and the CD-run-only nature of the software.

(c) All ACD software programs running on PCs are controlled by ACD/Host allowing the user to set loading, timeout and auto-reload parameters.

(d) All PC versions of ACD software come with a copy of updated ChemSketch including the updated Dictionary look-up product. It is now possible to output ChemSketch pages and reports as Adobe PDF format. For a detailed description of new capabilities see What's New in ChemSketch.

(e) As part of the input interface, all PC versions of ACD software can now convert SMILES strings to structures, and vice versa. (This applies to structures without stereochemical bonds.)

(f) All PC versions of ACD software installed on internet-enabled PCs can be updated online for bug fixes and patches through a password-protected automated reversible Online Updater with version control. The Online Updater delivers the most recent version 5.0 bug fixes and update enhancements. Software upgrades to the next version will not be delivered in this manner.

(g) All PC versions of ACD software that are not PhysChem, LC Simulator or GC Simulator include a new feature that automatically detects the default file association for certain file extensions that are special to ACD software (e.g. *.SK2, *.HUD, *.LUD). As of release 5.0, the right-hand menus of most ACD windows now contain the command File Associations, which brings up the following dialog box:

(h) All PC versions of ACD software come with updated third-party extensions for Cambridgesoft ChemDraw and ISIS/Draw. We offer third-party extensions for ISIS/Base and ISIS/Host separately.

(i) All PC versions of ACD software have a new command listed under the Help menu: File Bug Report or Feature Request. If you have an internet-enabled PC, selecting this command brings you automatically to the ACD web page for bug reports and new feature requests: http://www.acdlabs.com/feedback/bugs.html

(j) All PC versions of PhysChem and Name ACD product lines can be used to automatically fill data fields of user databases (e.g. for ChemFolder, NMR Predictor User Databases, SpecManager and ChromManager) through the Calculate Properties command in the Database window. The version information of the algorithm used to calculate properties can now be specified to automatically appear.

Calculate Properties

(k) A convenient new feature for all input/output dialogs in all windows of release 5.0 is that the File Open and File Close dialogs can be resized (lower right-hand corner of dialog). As well, file and folder manipulations such as new folder creation, clearing the desktop, and display of file details can be done without once leaving the dialog.
