ChemSketch for educators
TORONTO, May 30, 2003 - ACD/ChemSketch Promotes Active Learning in Students to Improve Laboratory Performance
Do you wish you could promote active learning and stimulate higher overall cognitive participation of students in the lab? In his organic chemistry laboratory at Gordon College in Georgia, Prof. Allan Gahr uses ChemSketch in a pre-lab exercise to help students better understand the lab experiment they are about to perform. For most organic labs, a concept map can be easily constructed with the underlying hierarchical framework of synthesis, isolation, purification, and characterization of carbon compounds. In Prof. Gahr's lab, students are required to draw diagrams/pictures of each process step in the sequence to be performed, so that they are forced to run through the process mentally before attempt it in reality. As a result, the students gain a better grasp of the overall process and concepts, which allows them to remain in control with less guidance from the instructor or lab assistants. More...

TORONTO, April 11, 2003 - ACD/Labs Congratulates the Winners of our ACS Spring ACD/ChemPalm Contest
Three lucky people were selected from all entries submitted in our ACD/ChemPalm daily contest held at ACS Spring. Each winner received a copy of ACD/ChemPalm with ACD/ChemSketch. ACD/ChemPalm enables storing, browsing, and searching of sophisticated chemical databases containing structures and accompanying analytical information on any standard PalmR OS-based PDA. Congratulations to: Roy Shenhar, Sally A. Henrie, and Bruce Lotz. We hope they enjoy their software.

User's Guide Lottery
TORONTO, April 9, 2003 - ACD/Labs Announces the Winner of the 2002 Users' Guide Lottery
Curtis MacIsaac, a student at the University of Prince Edward Island, told us that ACD/ChemSketch "really helped out with chairs in Organic Chemistry". After completing our User Guide Feedback form and sending us his comments, Curtis was selected as the winner of ACD/Labs' annual User Guide lottery. As the lucky winner, he has received a stand-alone copy of ACD/ChemFolder, uniting the excellent drawing capabilities of ACD/ChemSketch and the powerful database interface of ACD/HNMR, ACD/CNMR, and ACD/SpecManager. ACD/ChemFolder gives you the power to manage hundreds of separate files with chemical structures, reactions, and reports. You can create and keep all your chemical databases in one easy to use program! More...

TORONTO, April 7, 2003 - Ten Years of Effort Finally Pays Off
After over a decade of human effort by an NMR spectroscopist, the synergistic efforts of ACD/Structure Elucidator and the scientist have finally resulted in the elucidation of the chemical structure of a complex alkaloid. For the full story, read the manuscript which has been accepted for publication in the Magnetic Resonance Chemistry.

   University of Toronto
TORONTO, February 13, 2003 - ACD/Labs Announces Collaboration with NMR Scientist at the University of Toronto
Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc. (ACD/Labs) announces a collaboration with Dr. Andre Simpson of the Environmental Science department of the University of Toronto at Scarborough. Dr. Simpson has received a contribution from ACD/Labs that will facilitate his research on structural categories of carbon in the terrestrial pool.
In environmental samples such as soils, sea sediments, and air particulates, 1000's of structures can be present; making interpretation in the traditional sense very challenging. ACD/Labs software will significantly increase the efficiency of this interpretation process by allowing the identification of the unknown compounds more efficiently.
Dr. Simpson will be presenting some preliminary results of this collaboration at the Experimental NMR Conference (ENC) in Savannah, GA. If you would like to attend his presentation at the ACD/Labs Seminar, sign up here: ACD/Labs ENC Seminar.

TORONTO, February 12, 2003 - ACD/Labs offers NEW Chemical Nomenclature Service
ACD/Labs is now offering a new Chemical Nomenclature Service, putting the power of our ACD/Name software to work for you on a structure-by-structure basis. We will use our powerful Name software to quickly and accurately name your compounds. Then, since we want nothing left to chance, our own ACD/Labs naming experts will review the systematic nomenclature to certify that the name is correct. Whether you have an organic, biochemical, or, in some cases, an organometallic structure, and whether you need IUPAC or CAS Index rule-based names, we will do our utmost to provide a systematic name. Read more about our Chemical Nomenclature Service.
