Lipophilicity Descriptors: Understanding When to Use LogP & LogD

Sanji Bhal

Although the wider scientific community has now been using lipophilicity descriptors to predict the behavior of compounds in different areas of research for over a decade, there is still confusion over the limitations of logP, and unfamiliarity with logD and its significance. In this application note, we discuss the definitions of these two physicochemical property descriptors and illustrate, by example, the differing results obtained from applying these two terms to the same problem.
