Nitriles, Isocyanides, and their Derivatives

Rule C-833

833.1 - Compounds containing a group X listed in the first column of Table XIV are named by methods analogous to those described for cyanides in Rules C-832.4 and C-832.5; the functional class names given in the second column of the Table are used in place of "cyanide", or the prefixes given in the third column of the Table in place of "cyano-". The functional class names are also the generic names of the respective classes of compound.

Note: "Cyanide", like "carbonitrile" but unlike "nitrile", denotes the group -CN including its carbon atom. Its carbon atom is excluded from the numbering of a chain to which the group is attached.
