Additive Nomenclature

Rule C-34

34.1 - The use of the prefix "homo-" to denote incorporation of CH2 as an additional member into a ring is described in Steroid Rules 2S-7.1 and 2S-7.3. Use of the prefix "seco-" to denote ring fission, with addition of a hydrogen atom at each terminal group thus created, is described in Rule 2S-8.1. Wherever feasible, however, systematic names are preferred; for example (3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)acetic acid is preferred to homopiperonylic acid.
