The name "nitronium" has been used for the cation; even though this cation can be named "nitrylium" by applying Rule C-83.1 of the IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry to the radicals given by Recommendation I-8.4.2.2. of the IUPAC Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry , the name nitronium cannot be used for without ambiguity because of this previous usage.
