ACD/Labs Product Activation

  1. What is activation and why is it necessary?

Activation is a license validation procedure introduced in ACD/Labs Version 9 in order to prevent piracy and illegal use of our software. In addition to ensuring that your ACD/Labs software is authentic, license activation enables us to provide our valued customers with more efficient technical support and customer service.

  2. How do I activate my software?

Presently, you can activate ACD/Labs software manually, or automatically (available only in Version 2012 and later licenses).

To activate manually, please follow the steps described here.

To activate automatically, please follow the steps described here.

  3. When do I activate my software?

If you have ACD/Labs Version 11 or older, you have to activate your software manually as soon as you can before you can begin using it.

If you have ACD/Labs Version 12 or later, you will have a grace period of 7 days after installation during which you can use the software without activating. After the 7 days, you will be asked to activate the software before you can continue using it.

End-users of ACD/Labs Version 2012 and later have the option to activate immediately during the installation process, or at a later time of their choosing.

  4. How do I deactivate my software?

Presently, deactivation is only available in Version 2012 and later.

To deactivate manually, please follow the steps described here.

To deactivate automatically, please follow the steps described here.

  5. When do I deactivate my software?

If you are running ACD/Labs Version 2012 or later, you can deactivate your software at any time you desire.

  6. How do I know what version of ACD/Labs I have?

Check the Certificate of Authenticity that came with the software. If you have received a download link, the version number will be indicated on the download message that was sent to you.

You can also find the version information by clicking Help → About.

  7. When I tried to activate my ACD/Labs Version 2012 or later automatically, I got a warning that the ACD/Labs Activation Server is not available. What does it mean and what do I do?

This means that your computer is unable to communicate with the ACD/Labs Activation Server. Automatic activation only works on systems with direct and functional Internet connections. Check your Ethernet cable or wireless connection to verify that you are properly connected to the Internet.

If you are certain that your Internet is working properly and are still getting the warning above, launch the ACD/Labs Licensing tool (REGISTER), click on the Proxy button and then select the "Use Default Proxy Settings" check box to automatically detect and use your network's proxy server, or, if you would like to use a specific a proxy server, select the "Use Proxy Server" check box and enter the appropriate proxy information to enable your ACD/Labs software to connect to the ACD/Labs Activation Server. (Note: If you are not sure about your network's proxy settings or do not have the proxy server information, please consult your network's administrator.)

If you are on a computer that is not connected to the Internet, you will have to activate your license manually using a USB key or other portable media to transfer the manual activation email request to a system connected to the internet, and then to transfer the Activation Response Key back to the system to be activated.

  8. I installed ACD/Labs on a computer that is not connected to the Internet. How can I activate my software?

If you are on a computer that is not connected to the Internet, you will have to activate your license manually using a USB key or other portable media to transfer the manual activation email request to a system connected to the internet, and then to transfer the Activation Response Key back to the system to be activated.

  9. How many activations do I get?

If the license you purchased is in Broadcast Mode, the maximum activations allowed will be equal to the total number of concurrent users/seats purchased. Licenses issued in License Server Mode are allowed one activation for each License Server installation.

So, for example, if you purchased 500 copies of Spectrus Processor 2012 in broadcast mode, you can install and activate the software on up to and no more than 500 unique computers.

However, if you purchased the same license in license server mode, you will only need to activate once - on the license server itself. The 500 users or seats will not need to activate their licenses in this case.

  10. I've decided to move my software license to another computer, what do I need to do?

If you have ACD/Labs Version 12 or older, you will need to uninstall the software on the old machine before installing and activating it on the new machine. Please note that you may be asked to provide proof or certification of uninstallation before your license is activated on the new machine.

In Version 2012 and later, uninstallation automatically deactivates and frees up your license, and therefore allows you to install and activate on the new machine without any hassle or problem (if your system is able to connect to the ACD/Labs Activation Server). Additionally, you have the option to deactivate (but not uninstall) the software license on the old machine before installing it on the new machine. Deactivating will free up the license and enable its installation and activation on the new machine. This is ideal for people who wish to be more fluid in their ability to use the software (e.g., people who want to use the software on both their laptop and desktop machines, but not simultaneously).

IMPORTANT: If you have manually activated your license, you will have to manually deactivate it. Uninstallation will not automatically deactivate and free up your license in this case since your system is unable to connect to the ACD/Labs Activation Server. Please follow the instructions on manual deactivation under Section 4.

  11. I've decided to move my license server to another machine, what do I need to do?

If you have ACD/Labs Version 12 or older, you will need to uninstall the license server and its associated software registration keys from the old machine before installing and activating the license server on the new machine. Please note that you may be asked to provide proof or certification of uninstallation before your license(s) is/are activated on the new machine.

In Version 2012 and later, you will need to deactivate all registration keys on the old license server before uninstalling/removing it and installing and configuring the new license server. This will ensure that your license(s) is/are freed up and available for activation on the new license server.

Please note that running two license servers with the same set of registration keys is a violation of the ACD/Labs End-User License Agreement.

  12. My old computer crashed and burned. Can I reinstall and reactivate my ACD/Labs software on a new machine?

Absolutely. Simply contact us by phone at 1+416-368-3435 (choose Option 2), or by email at activation@acdlabs.com and we will happily help you get your license set up and activated properly. If you have Version 12 or newer, you will have the default grace period of 7 days to install and use your ACD/Labs software on the new machine until the activation is sorted out. Please note that you may be asked to provide proof or certification of equipment breakdown prior to your software being activated on your new machine.

  13. I reformatted my computer and want to reinstall and reactivate my ACD/Labs software on it. Do I need to do anything special?

If you kept the same computer settings as before, you should have no problem reinstalling and reactivating your software (either manually using the Activation Response Key we already sent to you, or automatically if you have Version 2012 or later). If you encounter any problem, simply contact us by phone at 1+416-368-3435 (choose Option 2), or by email at activation@acdlabs.com and we will happily help you sort it out.

  14. If I uninstall my ACD/Labs Version 2012 or later software, does the license automatically become available to install and activate on another machine?

Yes. If you are on system that is able to connect to the ACD/Labs Activation Server, uninstalling your Version 2012 or later software will automatically deactivate and free up your license, and allow you to install on a new machine of your choosing without any hassle or problem.

IMPORTANT: If you have manually activated your license, you will have to manually deactivate it. Uninstallation will not automatically deactivate and free up your license in this case since your system is unable to connect to the ACD/Labs Activation Server. Please follow the instructions on manual deactivation under Section 4.

  15. When I installed and automatically activated my ACD/Labs Version 2012 or later software, I received an error message saying that the activation was unsuccessful due to a conflict in the license(s) being installed and activated. What does it mean and what do I do?

Usually this means that you have exceeded the maximum number of activations allowed for the license you had purchased. One solution is to deactivate or uninstall one of the installations and try activating your installation again. Another solution is to purchase additional licenses.

If you believe you had gotten this message in error, please contact ACD/Labs by phone at 1+416-368-3435 (choose Option 2), or by email at activation@acdlabs.com, and we will be happy to sort it out. At any rate, all such errors are immediately reported to our assurance team, and someone is likely already investigating the cause and should be in contact with you very shortly.
